Last Saturday morning, hundreds of gun-rights activists rallied in front of the state house in Massachusetts. The protest, led by the Massachusetts Gun Owners’ Action League, was organized to rebuke the restrictions made on copycat assault rifles, made by Attorney General Maura Healey.

Healey issued an order to the state’s 350 gun dealers, effective last Wednesday, requiring them to stop selling copycat, or slightly altered, versions of common semiautomatic rifles like the AR-15. She argued that gun sellers were exploiting a loophole in the state’s 1998 assault weapons ban in order to sell functionally identical firearms, 10,000 of which she said were sold last year.

“The gun industry doesn’t get to decide what’s compliant,” she said at a press conference Wednesday. “We do.”

However, despite her efforts to debunk the sales of the copycat guns, there was a spike in sales following her speech.

Massachusetts dealers sold 2,251 military-style rifles Wednesday alone — more than 17 times the number sold the day before.

This jump was nearly a quarter of the total of guns sold from the previous year.

In addition to the gun owners and the Massachusetts Gun Owners’ Action League, there were also two dozen legislators who came to back the activists. They referred to the legislative session as “reinterpretation without representation.”

Healy announced that she will not prosecute citizens who purchased the guns before her ban. However, many of the gun owners are not buying it. They expect there to be unfair repercussions for owning the copycat rifles. Many of the protestors felt like Healy made legal gun owners “felons-in-waiting.”

“She could change her mind tomorrow,” Gun Owners’ Action League executive director Jim Wallace said.

“We don’t believe that anything in the Constitution is optional,” said Senate minority leader Bruce Tarr, to roars of approval. “Not the First Amendment that allows you to be here, and not the Second Amendment that allows you to defend yourself.”

While many of the activists had to make last minute changes to their busy schedules in order to come, they felt it was very important to show up.

“It’s tough on a Saturday. People have kids. People have to rearrange everything,” said Lee Stein, 53, of Chelmsford. “But it’s important.’

I think we can all take a lesson from the American citizens of Massachusetts. We absolutely cannot stand for any type of infringement upon our 2nd amendment rights. Some may argue that they feel Healey is simply trying to make the streets safer. However, we cannot compromise a little bit of “safety” for our rights to legally bear arms. As Benjamin Franklin stated in the historical review of Pennsylvania in 1759, “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

kelly sharpless, there is no such thing as an assault rifle. If there were, we would have assault knives, spoons, forks, shovels, hoses, wrenches, tire irons, crow bars, rakes, speech, food, books, etc… A person can assault someone with an object in hand, but that thing in hand is not an assault weapon.

    • ADRoberts

A way to use words to malign our rights. LIke HOMOPHOBIC. Or Islamophobic. We are not “phobic” when we stand up for OUR rights. And to let them get away with such a verbal assault is to let them WIN.

    • Nicodemus

Actually, it’s a weapon that fires a shorter cartridge with a reduced powder charge than a typical battle rifle and is capable of both semi and full-auto fire….currently covered by the NFA and requiring a $200 tax and putting your nuts in a grinder of a FBI background check. The first “assault rifle” was the German Geweher 43….modern ones include the M-16 and AK-47 (civilians in the USA can purchase AKS rifles, but not AK-47s). Of course, according to the US v. Miller decision, it’s THESE RIFLES the 2d Amendment give you the right to own….not .22 caliber pistols….but of course liberals don’t read the law, history, conflicting case law, Ayn Rand, Ronald Dworkin or Voltaire or anything that goes against their warped sense of reality…

  • Mark

There were thousands, not hundreds as “reported” by the local mainstream pravada
    and state controlled television stations.

Hey, Keep and Bear editorial staff: I’m a fan of this web site, but I’m sick and tired of seeing the “THANK RUTH BADER GINSBURG FOR STANDING AGAINST CITIZENS UNITED” ads. I have nothing to thank Ruth Bader Ginsburg for. Least of all for her opposition to Citizens United, a solid conservative watch dog group.

    • Eric Haulenbeek

I think you’ve missed the point!

    • ADRoberts

Wickedness DOES migrate to the faces of women. And she proves it. She refuses to uphold the Constitution. Every decision she makes is based on HER own morality. And it is apparent she has NONE.

    • ADRoberts

And by the way, these sites have NO control over the ads that these predators put out. They can’t stop them. Just ask Ruth.

  • Huffer

Attorney General Maura Healey…just who the h_ _ l do you think you are? You cannot MAKE LAW on your personal, ignorant, feelings!!! You have no knowledge of how a real (so called) assault rifle operates. You have shown yourself to be pawn, with no mind of your own, in the hands of political manipulator’s!

If every one of the “BAD” rifles was tracked down and inspected, just how many do you believe is an actual full-auto weapon?

The 2nd amendment is very specific: The ownership of a firearm by the American people will not be infringed! You are such an ass-hat, you’ve probably never looked up the meaning of the term “infringe”!
Now get back in your isolated Ivory Castle before some deranged moron does to you what you so fear. These moron’s, like yourself, are all around us and we who love our families will continue to find methods of protecting them!

So many women who are so easy to control by the puppet masters.
Lerner, Napolatino, Murray, Schultz, Brown, Reno,
Just think of it this way. These are women who will OBEY in order to appear to be in charge.

    • David in MA

Even so, the legislature can over ride any “rule and/or regulation” she or any other department head creates.
This is leading up to Obama imposing martial law before November.
BTW: All you firearms owners who voted for Healy, your partially to blame…… Massachusetts, are you ready to stop being a democrat ruled state yet?

      • Grumpy old man

David, a lot of the Republicans we elected to start correcting things haven’t been much better. Not all, but some that just go along with everything like the Establishment Republicans in Washington. We have had a few pro-gun Dems as well, but not enough.

    • Nicodemus

Not to mention the fact that US v. Miller (the only Supreme Court decision on point), says the 2d Amendment ONLY protects the right of citizens to own MILITARY-STYLE WEAPONS! In other words, we should all be walking around with M-16’s and M-60’s and RPGs! I would love to see the look on her face as someone explains this to her!

    • Dave

Last time I looked the FBI had no record of a crime ever being committed with a legally owned assault rifle or any other type of machine gun.

  • Eric Haulenbeek

Gun grabber’s have one goal in mind, and that is to break down our Constitution. These people are anti-American activists who have been working against the American people for years. They will lie, cheat and corrupt the system to achieve their end result. Don’t ever trust these people!

    • ADRoberts

Actually, the elite who are controlling them have more in mind. First you have to register. Then you confiscate to leave the people defenseless. Then you can either allow the criminals to romp and stomp, OR you just just MASSACRE those who resist you, LIKE Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot and the Guatemalan government did.
      GOAL —–“Total and complete control.

  • MajJohn

The AR 15 is not an assault weapon and should not be banned. Why would the governor care whether or not anyone made something to look like it?

  • ADRoberts

Don’t march. Recall. Demand that she be removed from office. If you let her off the hook in ANY way, she will just come back from a different direction and at a smaller scale.
Death of our rights by a THOUSAND CUTS.
Where are the people with back bones. Where are the men and women who act like the Founding Fathers?
    Cowards?
Now it is time to be LIKE THEM. Never back down. Never give an inch. And Never let them win.

  • Dave

Actually there is such a thing as an assault rife. It is a fully automatic rifle of reduced size using a less powerful cartridge then the military rifles that preceded it. An M-16 is an assault rifle. (full-auto) It has been illegal to manufacture or import any fully automatic firearm for sale to anyone other than military, police, & some licensed machine gun dealers to use as sales samples. You can buy one of the few that exist after a thorough background check, a letter from your local police chief, and payment of a $200 transfer tax Expect to pay about $20,000 for one. An AR-15 is a rifle,(semi-auto) under Federal law no different than a bolt action or lever action rifle.

    • Nicodemus

Just FYI: for $40 or so you can buy an attachment that fits on the trigger guard that makes your semi-auto fire almost as fast as a full-auto (Feinstein tried unsuccessfully to outlaw them recently….like the drop-in auto sears people used to be able to buy buy were eventually regulated). I’ve never actually seen one in use, but saw a video of one that looked impressive. Get them while you can…

      • Dave

Various gadgets of that type have been around for at least 30 years. I have seen a bunch of them. They are not bad for seeing how fast you can empty a magazine but not so good for accuracy. Best one I saw was a cam affair which moved the trigger forward after the shot fired so a steady pressure on the trigger would result in continuous fire. The one I saw was a prototype. If it ever went into production I did not hear about it.

        • Nicodemus

Well, I was informed the one I saw being demo’d in the video is a piece of junk….. Of course if Hitlery is elected (through the expected, massive voter fraud), there should be plenty of legitimate full-auto’s lying on the ground, waiting for you to take your pick…

          • Dave

Good point. What most people do not understand is that a full auto in the hands of the average person is not nearly as effective as a semi auto & at 400 yards or so a marksman with a single shot or bolt action can take out a whole squad of amateurs with full autos. Tripod mounted belt fed machine guns are another matter but damn few people can carry one of those around.

          • Nicodemus

Ah, but if people did, crime would be non-existent!

  • David in MA

I have always understood that a law passed today can only be enforced from that day on, not to the past, anything before the new law is legal.
To me this also comes under infringement.
    I will not comply!
    MOLON LABE!

  • SIRWIZARD

Massachusetts. Home of Lexington and Concord. Once the home of Patriots that fired on British Troops that came to take powder, shot, and weapons away from colonists. How many Patriots still live there? We may get to see one day soon.

If we want to use the term “Assault Rifle”, then we have to remember that the smooth-bore musket was once the military;s assault weapon. Then, there was the muzzle loading rifle. A few lever action rifles, and, in WWI, the M-1903 Springfield 30.06 bolt action rifle. In WWII, the 8-round clip fed M-1 semi auto. In their own way, all of these early weapons were just as lethal as an AR-15…many MORE SO. Let’s be honest here. Liberals believe the AR-15 is REALLY DANGEROUS because it LOOKS LETHAL. It has thingies that hand down…HANDLES, MAGAZINES, and horror of horrors, a BAYONET LUG next to a FLASH SUPPRESSOR. There are thousands of rifles out there that are far more lethal than the .223 AR-15.

    • Nicodemus

at close range, a 12 gauge shotgun is a LOT more lethal….but it doesn’t look as “scary” so they haven’t tried to ban those….yet…

      • SIRWIZARD

even BIRD shot will do at close range. You are entirely correct, sir.

    • Huffer

What so many get distracted by in the 2nd amendment argument is, it has absolutely nothing to do with safety for the public!!! It has everything to do with the establishments safety against us when we defend our freedom! They want NO RESISTANCE when they try to implement a One World Government.
They are almost there! They do not want to get a full range war going but to divide and conquer through slow infringement on our defenses. It’s a matter of convincing the uneducated to comply with being under full political control for a piece of bread and a TV!
With the entire news media owned and controlled by THEM, they come into everyone’s living rooms with full-on brain washing.
I hate to admit it, but, things do not bode well for the future of the greatest nation that was ever assembled by man and God. When so many decided to kick God, and His plans for us out of our system and run things on our own, it’s been downhill ever since! Man’s senses do not have the wisdom to handle a thriving nation. Personal greed get’s the best of those at the top and the very bottom of that ladder. Thus: ‘The New World Order’!

      • SIRWIZARD

What you say will sound paranoid…to a Liberal, but there is truth behind every word of your statement. Much of what is said today, I would’ve written off as “Conspiracy Theories” eight years ago. Times have certainly changed. I suppose this is part of the ‘CHANGE’ Mr. Obama promised?

  • Fred8512

Again, there is no such thing as an assault rifle, pistol, revolver, etc… I have never been assaulted by a firearm, I have been shot at by someone with a firearm. The firearm cannot load itself, aim itself, or shoot by itself.
