Perhaps Willie Dove picked the right time to set the wrong example.

With debate over firearms policies ringing out in the State Capitol, the ultraconservative House member from Bonner Springs recently made the serious mistake of leaving his loaded handgun unattended in a Statehouse committee meeting room.

In doing so, Dove also made a case for caution as the state draws closer to encouraging people to be armed on college campuses.

A new law to take effect in July would require state-run universities in Kansas to allow anyone 21 and older to carry concealed weapons on campus.

Sensible state lawmakers currently are out to undo the law that promises to do more harm than good. As part of the effort, more lawmakers must stand up to National Rifle Association bullies who push campus carry and other gun-friendly policies that serve gun manufacturers’ interests.
