The sad truth is that we call police to investigate crimes, not to save us from a crime taking place.

It’s not the fault of the police, and it’s certainly not the fault of the victim, but the police simply cannot make it to the scene of a crime quickly enough to keep the crime from taking place.

Usually, the police arrive several minutes after the crime has concluded and the criminal has fled. The police then begin their investigation as they attempt to piece together what has taken place, who has committed the crime, and where/if they can find the culprit(s).

This is how it works.

Which is bad news for any victims who may be caught between the criminal and their prize. Like one mother in Marietta, Georgia who suddenly found herself thrust in to a “do or die” situation… and she wasn’t ready to die.

From Atlanta’s WSB-TV 2:

Police told Channel 2’s Liz Artz that a woman called and said someone was breaking into her house, and that she had shot and killed him.

The woman was identified as Shaquita Green. She said she doesn’t know who barged into her home in the middle of the night, but she said he was armed and threatened to kill her three children.

“It was either him or me and I wasn’t going. My kids weren’t going to get hurt and they weren’t going to see me get hurt,” she said.

Green said the man, who police later identified as Keandre Funches, 27, kept asking for her husband, who wasn’t home. After forcing the family to the back of the house, she was able to get her gun and open fire.

“That’s when I stepped in front of them and said, ‘You don’t have to do all of that,’” Green said.

By the time police arrived the home intruder was dead. Mrs. Green was taken into custody and questioned by the police for several hours.

“I thank God it played out the way it did. I hate that someone had to lose their life, but he shouldn’t have come and brought his a** in my house, excuse my language,” Mrs. Green told the local news.

The family believes that Mr. Funches was led to the home by another man who set the home invasion up. Police apparently agree with the Green’s as they have taken the second man into custody and charged him with aggravated assault with a firearm, false imprisonment, cruelty to children and felony murder.

This was the second time that Mrs. Green has been involved with a case where a criminal intruder has been shot by the intended victim. In 2013 she was a material witness in a similar case in Illinois. Green knows more than most that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun, is for a good guy with a gun to get involved.
