Gov. Susana Martinez vetoed a bill Friday that would have kept guns out of the hands of anyone a judge considers a credible threat under a domestic violence restraining order.

Her decision, announced in the final hours before her deadline to act on legislation, was a blow to advocates for gun control and victims of domestic violence.

Martinez, a career prosecutor before becoming governor, said in her veto message that Senate Bill 259 is unnecessary because judges already have the power to confiscate guns when issuing restraining orders in domestic violence cases.

Miranda Viscoli, co-president of New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, criticized Martinez’s decision.
