A violent criminal didn’t expect to encounter such tough resistance when he broke into the Katy, Texas home of an elderly grandmother. Instead of walking away with the woman’s most valuable possessions, the intruder lost his life.

The man and an accomplice broke into the home early Tuesday morning after most of the home’s residents had already left for the day.

The two men were armed with pistols and walked into the home through the open garage. Once inside the two men were confronted by the 60-year old grandmother who then produced a gun of her own and a firefight ensued.

One of the men fled the scene, but the other man sustained at least one gun shot wound and died.

While authorities say it’s too soon to know if they’ll be filing charges against the woman, her neighbors are clearly on her side.

“It’s just, you know what, in the state of Texas, if you’re gonna get on somebody’s property, you’re gonna get shot,” one neighbor said. “That’s just the way we are, that’s Texas.”

KTRK/ABC13 Reporter Kaitlin McCulley shared some video from the scene on Twitter:

Hopefully, the local authorities will soon capture the criminal who is still on the run and they’ll fully exonerate the victim from any wrongdoing.

This is just more evidence that a good guy (or grandma) with a gun is the only real defense against a bad guy with a gun.
