The police department in West, Texas is now handing out free gun locks for the month of June. They partnered up with the Project Child Safe program in order to raise awareness and education about safety with firearms.
The Project Child Safe describes themselves as a program of the “National Shooting Sports Foundation” that promote firearm safety. Their site states, “We are committed to promoting genuine firearm safety through the distribution of safety education messages and free firearm safety kits to communities across the U.S.”
According to KWTX, citizens can pick up their free lock, along with informative pamphlets at the station.
According to the National Safety Council accidents involving guns in the home have decreased significantly in the last 20 years.
Chief Darryl Barton said gun safety is always a good idea even for those with years of experience.
“Just because you’re an expert shot out on the range doesn’t mean that somebody in your home can’t access a gun that you may have just used. Put that gun away immediately, safely store it with either a gun lock or gun safe because it takes a second for a child to grab it and use it,” said Barton.
Barton said people don’t need to live in West to get the locks.
Barton encourages anyone who may be interested to check with their own police department to see if they also have the locks available.
