The country music community, for the most part, consists of artist and fans that tend to lean right on political issues. That might be why Tim McGraw is being called a hypocrite by gun rights advocates and country music fans for his decision to headline “A Concert For Sandy Hook Promise” on July 17th.

Sand Hook Promise is an organization dedicated to “protecting children from gun violence”, which is why various gun rights groups are referring to this event as a “gun control fundraiser”. Tim McGraw became involved with the organization through his fiddle player Dean Brown, who is close friends with the group’s advocacy director Mark Barden who lost his son in the shooting.

“Through a personal connection, I saw first-hand how the Sandy Hook tragedy affected families and I felt their pain,” McGraw added. “The concert is meant to do something good for a community that is recovering.”

There has been a public outcry on social media from the country music and gun community calling for boycotts of his music and future events. Tim responded to the criticism by saying:

“Let me be clear regarding the concert for Sandy Hook given much of the erroneous reporting thus far,” McGraw told FOX411 in a statement. “As a gun owner, I support gun ownership. I also believe that with gun ownership comes the responsibility of education and safety – most certainly when it relates to what we value most, our children. I can’t imagine anyone who disagrees with that.”

Country music star Billy Currington was also scheduled to take part in the benefit concert, but withdrew yesterday after making a public statement via Facebook:

McGraw’s decision to take part in this event is already being compared to the controversial statements made by Dixie Chick’s lead singer Natalie Maines concerning President Bush. Her statements lead to the meteoric decline of the band, and many believe this concert may have the same effect for Tim McGraw’s career.
