By now just about everyone has heard about Jim Cooley, the Georgia man that decided to carry an AR with 100 round drum into Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport last week. It created an uproar from just about everyone. And now just a week later, yet another guy decided to carry a loaded gun into the SAME airport. The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 11th at 10:30 PM, and that guy was me.

You probably didn’t read about it on every news station in the country this morning. Matter of fact, you guys are the first people to hear about this at all. Hell, my wife didn’t even know when I met her at the baggage claim. Why? Because I was legally carrying my loaded weapon concealed. No one was harmed, no one was freaked out, and no TSA goon hassled me. Now me and Cooley essentially did the exact same thing under Georgia law, but with one MAJOR difference. I carried my pistol strictly for the purpose of protecting myself and my wife (like I do everyday), while Mr. Cooley carried his gun to be an ass hole (please wait till the end before ripping me a new one gun friends).

Jim Cooley was completely within his rights to carry his long-gun into the airport. He was withing his right to carry it around with a 100 round drum as well. But as my dear mother said to me countless times as a teenager,

“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should- dumbass.”

The second amendment is under attack in the U.S.. Most of our heads aren’t buried in the sand so far that we can’t admit that. However, defending and keeping this inalienable right needs to be done carefully and with tact. This is where a large majority of gun lovers tend to disagree with me, and that’s okay.

I agree with Cooley when he said, “If you don’t exercise your rights, the government doesn’t have any hesitation taking them away.” However, his approach to the general public, “People’s fears are not my responsibility…” is something I can’t get behind.

It would be nice to live in a society where people didn’t worry so much about what other people were doing. It would be nice to live in a place where whining wasn’t rewarded, but that’s not the case in today’s society. There are people that want every gun out there confiscated and melted down. There are folks out there that would love to see every man, woman and child carrying some form of weapon. Then there are people out there that don’t care as long as it doesn’t affect their lives directly.

The reality is that there are a large number of people that might not care anything about guns, but they sure as hell don’t want to see them while in public. When someone like Mr. Cooley decides to pull a stunt like this, he ends up pushing these apathetic folks on the fence into the open arms of Bloomberg and his cronies by scaring the shit out of them.

I may be alone in my thinking, but open carrying ARs, RPGs, etc. because you can doesn’t help the 2A cause. Instead it does the exact opposite. It brings unnecessary NEGATIVE attention, it labels all gun owning American as Gun-Nuts through association. And it stokes the fires of those who want to take away our rights. Do you not think that Atlanta Mayor, Kasim Reed, and other leftist haven’t been waiting for someone like Cooley to pull a stunt like this ever since Governor Deal passed the “Safe Carry Protection Act” last year? This is the sort of issue they have been hoping for in order to drum up the support from the apathetic crowd.

Mamma always said that, “The squeaky wheel gets the oil”. Unfortunately in this case of open carrying ARs- that oil is negative press, laws and rights taken away. Carry your weapon to protect you and your family. Don’t be a dick and ruin it for everyone else just because you want attention.
