The folks over at Lucky Gunner have done it now…
They have provided us with extensive data for the never ending debate of Best Self-Defense Ammo, and man is it great. What kind of data you may ask. Well they didn’t just take the top selling brands and test them in their backyard. In fact, they performed multiple ballistic gel tests for 117 different self-defense handgun ammunition loads. You heard that right, 117!
This is one of the best studies I have seen. Not only do they break down ballistics testing for those new to this type of testing, but they also science the crap out of it. They follow FBI protocol (for the most part) and then take it to the next level.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of the tests was the use of “practical” carry guns as opposed to full sized pistols, like the FBI and ammo manufacturers use in similar tests. This gives realistic data for concealed carriers, instead of the inflated numbers you see on the back of the box.
After drooling over all of this golden data you may feel inclined to say, “HEY! Where’s my ammo?” Now before you do that I’d like to point out a couple of things:
FIRST: The average cost for a block of ballistic gel is roughly $150-$200, and we will say the average cost per box of self-defense ammo is between $25-$35. Now multiply those numbers by 117. I’ll let you do the math, but I can think of a few other things I would rather spend my hard earned cash on.
SECOND: The amount of time it took to perform the tests, collect the data, and then put it on a plate for you to enjoy has got to be substantial. So quit whining.
Long story short, you should drop everything your doing and check this out for yourself here.
