If Steve Harvey were to ask me, under the bright lights of the Family Feud set, what animal species had the most ferociously protective mothers, I would imagine there only being a need for one answer on the board.

Grizzly Bear.

These enormous animals are fiercely protective of their young; so much so that this analogy has become the de facto description for strong, motherly instincts the world over.  While terrifying in its natural, furry incarnation, the sentiment becomes more about fearlessness and love than about reckless violence.

In other words, it can be an ugly scene, but with the best intentions.

One woman in Dallas, Texas tapped into this primal energy this week when a carjacker foolishly, figuratively got in between her and her child during an attempted robbery.

And you know what they say; Don’t mess with Texas.

A mother shot a man who tried to steal her SUV while her two toddlers were still inside the vehicle in Dallas Wednesday night, police said.

It happened about 10 p.m. outside a Shell service station in the 100 block of West Camp Wisdom Road.

The mother had stepped inside the gas station when a man climbed into the driver’s seat and tried to drive away, according to police. The woman jumped back into the vehicle and ordered the man to stop the car, police said.

When he refused, she pulled a gun from the glove box and shot the man, who then drove the SUV into a utility pole, according to police.

Only the would-be carjacker was inured during the harrowing ordeal, with the mother and her children exiting the incident without a scratch.

The perpetrator was transported to a local hospital, here it is believed that he will recover fully from his injuries just in time to face several charges and a lengthy prison sentence.

While this may not be the express, written purpose of the Second Amendment, this bit of collateral divinity has been saving lives from the very installation of the amendment itself.  Stories such as the one of this brave mother also go a long way in helping to reiterate the reality of the “good guy with a gun” metaphor for self defense.
