Chicago saw its 1,000th gunshot victim this week. It’s only a few victims less than 2016’s record breaking year for gun violence. Between the city of Chicago, Cook County and the state of Illinois, the Windy City has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, but they have obviously failed to curb gun violence. Yet, the mayor is calling for more gun control laws as if it’s guns causing the violence and not the people.
Over the past several years, gun violence has dramatically increased in the Windy City on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. In 2015, Chicago’s mayor, the dishonorable Rahm Emanuel, former White House Chief of Staff under Barack Obama, went so far as to blame the Chicago Police Department for the increased gun violence in his city, saying:
“We have allowed our Police Department to get fetal, and it is having a direct consequence. They have pulled back from the ability to interdict … they don’t want to be a news story themselves, they don’t want their career ended early, and it’s having an impact.”
Emanuel was speaking about the growing number of police officers who find themselves facing criminal charges for doing their jobs. His statement was no surprise at the time, since Obama was helping black activists wage a war against law enforcement officers, nationwide.
Mayor Emanuel has blamed the police and lack of enough gun control laws for the out-of-control gun violence, but he fails to see it’s a culture problem, not a gun problem. Until the culture is changed, the gun violence will continue and more people will be shot and more families destroyed.
