Iowans are a rightfully proud sort of Americans with a long and sturdy history when it comes to matters of freedom.
And rightfully so – the state is often where the nation gets its first glimpse at the next President through the caucuses that have made the state famous. Media darlings and crooked criminals alike must first pass through the Hawkeye State before becoming part of the national vernacular.
Given the great honor of this rite of political passage, it comes as no surprise that Iowa is also a state of principals. After all, how could we dare to judge our next Commander in Chief in a state with any lesser idea of liberty? (California comes to mind, of course).
Now, Iowans are taking another stand in the fight against potential tyranny, upholding and reinforcing the 2nd Amendment through their own state constitution, and gun rights advocates everywhere are applauding.
“Advocates for and against gun rights spoke out at the Capitol today on a proposed amendment to the Iowa constitution.
“The amendment states that Iowans’ rights to acquire, keep, possess, transport, carry, transfer, and use arms for all legitimate purposes shall not be infringed, and that courts should strictly scrutinize any attempt to regulate them.
“Rep. Matt Windschitl (R-Missouri Valley) said the amendment backs up second amendment rights already secured by the U.S. Constitution
“’It spells it out very clearly and concisely so that there is no question about what our Second Amendment rights are,’ Windschitl said, ‘and that if they are to be regulated the regulations will be held to a very high level of scrutiny by our judicial system.’
“Windschitl said he does not intend to use the amendment to throw out Iowa’s gun laws.”
This state amendment is yet another reason why the resilience of conservative Americans will never be truly tested by any threat, foreign or domestic.
Now, if only we could spread this sort of Second Amendment adoration throughout our fine nation.
