In 1996, Australia passed their gun ban known as the National Firearms Agreement, which required private citizens to turn over their banned weapons during a year-long government buyback system. Over twenty years later, we still hear of firearm buybacks and amnesty program to turn in firearms in various locations throughout gun-free Australia, indicating that many people either never turned in their guns or have managed to obtain them since the ban.

Over the weekend, Australian officials have reported that a family of seven were shot to death at the Margaret River home. Some believe it may have been a murder suicide as police found 3 firearms that belonged to a family member.

(Perth Now) – THE grieving relatives of the Miles family who were found dead at their Margaret River property say they are still trying to comprehend the tragedy which unfolded.

In a statement, they appealed for the public to refrain from speculating about what happened and allow them to grieve.

“We are devastated by this shocking event,” the statement said. “We are stunned and still trying to understand how this could happen.

“We respectfully ask that the community refrain from speculating on the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

“We thank the community for their support and ask that our privacy is respected as we grieve.”

Obviously, Australia’s gun ban did not prevent this latest mass shooting in Australia. The dead included Peter Miles, 61, wife Cynda Miles, 58, daughter Katrina, 35 and Katrina’s 4 kids ranging in age from 8 to 13. Police are treating this as murder suicide but begs the question if it would have happened had there not been guns or would the perpetrator have used some other weapon?
