What would you do if you heard a female neighbor yelling, screaming and being abused for hours? Would you get involved? Would you try to stop the abuse? Would you call the police or just do what many do and not get involved? Would it make a difference if the abuser was a black American? That was the decision a Nevada man was faced with as he heard the long abuse of a female neighbor in his apartment complex. He was in the parking lot when the victim confronted him and apparently asked for help. She had obviously been beaten as she was bleeding from her face. That’s when the abusive boyfriend also confronted the neighbor who had a gun. He ended up firing once and shooting the abusive boyfriend and killing him. Although he saved the woman from any further abuse, the police are investigating the shooting to determine if any charges will be filed.
The Clark County District Attorney will decide if a man will face charges in a late-night shooting death at an apartment complex near the Meadows Mall. Police said it appears the man was trying to protect a woman who was being beaten by her boyfriend.
Metro Police detectives said the shooter was not arrested and was cooperating with investigators.
Police were called to the apartment on Mission Laguna Lane around 10 p.m. Thursday night by a security guard who reported the shooting.
Police criticized the good neighbor’s actions, saying that people should call the police and leave it to them to resolve this kind of situation. While that may sound like the right thing to do, it generally takes police an average of 5 to 15 minutes to respond to calls. That’s time enough for the abuser to inflict more physical harm and even possibly kill someone. Another thing to consider is that according to the report, the abusive boyfriend confronted the neighbor in the parking lot of the apartment complex and it’s quite possible the neighbor feared for his life and had no alternative but to shoot.
