Society will always be populated with a certain percentage of complete and utter jerks who attempt to eek their way through life by cheating, lying to, and stealing from those around them.

It is an absolute and unwavering balance of the world at large.  For every bit of Utopia to be had, there is an equal amount of dystopia lurking in the shadows.  That’s not to say that the land mass or population of these two distinctly different arenas are equal to one another.  The balance is far more gravitational than that.

For every city in the nation, there is a part of town that isn’t exactly “tourist-friendly”, and that bit of dystopia grows every time that the shiny, spic-and-span epicenter gets cleaned out.

The same balance exists in the gun debate, where the vast, overwhelming majority of gun owners are what we would deem “good guys”, for simplicity’s sake.  Unfortunately, that does mean that those seldom and shocking acts of gun violence that do occur are often quite disheartening.

But, what happens when our dystopian thugs are confronted by our utopian gun owners?  Well, it’s a bit predictable, but it’s also quite important to understand.

“WGN 9 reports that the incident unfolded at an apartment complex on Harbor Drive, ‘when someone with a knife attacked another person during an argument.'”

Neighbor Dave Thomas, (no relation to the hamburger entrepreneur), was prepared to do what it takes to protect his neighbor.

“Thomas said, ‘I poked my head out the door. There was a pool of blood, blood was everywhere in the hall. There was still a confrontation going on, there were about three or four people involved at this point. So I ran back into my house and grabbed my AR-15. I grabbed the AR-15 over my handgun — bigger gun, I think a little more of an intimidation factor. Definitely played a part in him actually stopping.'”

To top it all off, Thomas’ matter-of-fact retelling of his thought process was a precise and wonderful example of the realism of this responsible gun owner.

“Thomas gave a statement afterward, saying, “’The AR-15 is my weapon of choice for home protection. It’s light, it’s maneuverable. If you train and know how to use it properly, it’s not dangerous. And this is just a perfect example of good guy with an AR-15 stopped a bad guy with a knife. And there were no lives taken, so all in all it was a good day.’”

Yes, Dave, it certainly was a good day, thanks to your bravery and composure.
