When “Last Man Standing” was canceled by ABC, eyebrows were raised.

The show had fantastic ratings and a large following, considering the series was one of the only on television with a right-leaning leading man.

After being revived by Fox, Tim Allen and company made a triumphant return Friday night.

The ratings on Fox were electric.

From Daily Wire:

On Friday, the debut of Tim Allen’s sitcom “Last Man Standing” drew an impressive 8 million viewers on Fox, according to Variety. The outlet notes that the sitcom’s 1.8 in adults 18-49 is the highest the show has received since its second season on ABC.

“Last Man Standing” began its initial six-season run on ABC in 2011. It was cancelled in 2017 despite being ABC’s second highest-rated comedy, trailing “Modern Family” by approximately half a million viewers in Live+7 ratings.

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey claimed that the cancellation was due to “many factors,” one of which was the network’s move away from comedy on Friday nights. There was also speculation that the cancellation was due in part to licensing costs as the show was produced by 20th Century Fox.

Allen was “blindsided” when the show was canned by ABC, as you’d expect.

From Allen after the cancellation, per Fox News:

Appearing on Norm Macdonald Live, the host asked Allen about the show, which was canceled in May in a total surprise to both fans and the star as its ratings were the second highest at the network. At the time, many speculated that the show was given the boot because it and Allen’s humor skew toward more conservative-minded Americans. While ABC denied those claims, Allen told the host that he believes his conservative views were the real reason he lost his sitcom.

“I always wanted ‘Last Man Standing’ to be like Archie Bunker,” Allen said, referencing the controversial “All in the Family” series. “Archie Bunker pushed boundaries, but Carroll O’Connor was not that guy at all. I am a version of that guy. But there is nothing more dangerous, especially in this climate, than a funny, likable conservative character. He is mitigated on the show by a family of women who had a difference of opinions, but he was a likeable guy and a principled guy about work and ethics and all this stuff, I think.”

More, after the cancellation:

Following the cancellation of ABC’s “Last Man Standing” fans were notoriously upset considering its obvious popularity. Now, a network executive is speaking out to assure fans politics had nothing to do with the Tim Allen sitcom getting the axe.

“Politics had absolutely nothing to do with it – we have actors on our shows who have all sorts of different political views,” ABC president of Entertainment Channing Dungey told reporters at the Television Critics Press Association press tour, per The Wrap. She was addressing the recent controversy in which many people believed the show and its star’s conservative-leaning humor and subject matter played a part in it being ripped off the air.
