A police officer shot and killed a teenage boy Monday after the boy allegedly pulled out a gun during an Xbox sale in Chesterfield County, Va.

An off-duty Richmond police officer intercepted an unidentified teenage boy at the Chestertowne Shopping Center parking lot while buying an Xbox around 12:30 a.m, the New York Post reported. During the sale, the teen reportedly attempted to rob a group of men that was selling him the gaming system, according to Chesterfield police Major Frank Carpenter.

“It was an attempted robbery by the juvenile,” Carpenter said. The attempted robbery escalated when the teen allegedly pulled out his pistol, leading to a gunfire exchange with the officer. The boy died at the scene.

The officer was shot in the torso, but his wounds are not life-threatening.

A police spokesman said the officer in question is expected to make a full recovery.

“Officer Misegades, a four-year veteran of the Department, was treated and released for his injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery,” said a Richmond Police spokesperson. “Due to this being an active investigation, the Richmond Police Department will defer all questions to the Chesterfield Police Department.”
