For many years, military personnel have been banned from carrying firearms on US military bases, unless it was in the line of duty such as military police or carrying weapons for training. The reasons are confused depending upon what source you look at, but many say it was to prevent a military takeover of the government.

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that he was taking a look at the policy of banning military personnel from carrying firearms while on US military bases. He is considering allowing military personnel to carry their privately-owned weapons while on US military bases.

(Military Times) – President Donald Trump on Friday said he would re-examine federal policies restricting troops from carrying private firearms on military bases, calling it an important safety issue.

But Defense Department leaders have in the past resisted widespread changes to those firearms policies because of concerns it could lead to more accidental shootings and successful suicides.

The comments from the commander in chief came during a speech to the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, while he was talking about possible solutions to gun violence in America.

“We’re going to look at that whole military base gun-free zone,” he said. “If we can’t have our military holding guns, it’s pretty bad.

“We had a number of instances on military bases, you know that. So we want to protect our military. We want to make our military stronger and better than it’s ever been before.”

A number of military personnel said that had they been allowed to carry a weapon on base, that the death tolls from the two mass shootings at Ft. Hood, would have been much lower. One person said that he normally carried a concealed carry weapon when off base, but while on base, he couldn’t and he said if he had his weapon, he could have stopped Army Major Nidal Hassan, turned Islamic terrorist at the very beginning of his rampage, saving most of the 13 lives that were lost. If Trump follows through, it would help prevent another similar incident.
