We’ve all gone to the polls and read various ballot issues, propositions and initiatives, and after reading them, find them confusing or politically one-sided. I recall a proposition on the ballot a few years ago, that after reading it, I wasn’t sure if I voted yes if it really meant no or a no vote really meant yes.

Many entities that write ballot initiatives generally try to write them to lead people to vote their way and that is not always legal. A current gun control measure that was slated to head to the November ballot in Oregon, is being legally challenged due to the way it was written. The legal challenge, going before the Oregon State Supreme Court, claims that wording of the gun control measure is ‘politically charged and emotionally laden’, to inspire people to vote for the measure.

(The Oregonian – OregonLive) – The Oregon Supreme Court received a legal challenge to the ballot language for a gun control initiative Wednesday, posing a potentially major roadblock for proponents hoping to collect the needed signatures by the deadline.

National Rifle Association lobbyist Roger Beyer filed the petition Wednesday morning objecting to the official ballot language as “politically charged and emotionally laden.”

The court must decide on his challenge and set official ballot language before supporters of the proposed ballot measure can begin gathering the required 88,184 valid signatures. The deadline to submit signatures is July 6, and legally, the court’s handling of matter could drag out close to that date or beyond it…

The truth of the matter is that the entire gun control issue has become one that is politically charged and emotionally laden with little to no basis on real facts or the real issue, which is not the violence, but the effort to eventually ban all private ownership or possession of firearms. After all, a socialist political party cannot make a major move against a heavily armed population.
