The Culpeper Minute Men was a militia group formed in 1775 in the area around Culpeper, Virginia. Much like the Minute Men in other colonies, they drilled in military practices and were trained to respond to any emergency. They fought on the patriot side of the American Revolution, and were crucial in the defense of Hampton in October 1775. Their expert marksmen were able to shoot the men manning British cannons, and as a result the ships never landed. They disbanded at the end of the Revolutionary War, but were seen again during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I.

Of course, their most famous symbol is the Culpeper Minute Men Flag. The flag is a simple while field with a coiled rattle snake on it. It has both the phrases “Don’t Tread On Me” And “Liberty Or Death” on it. Both sets of words were sweeping the nation at the time of the Revolutionary War, when Americans were finally ready to claim their independence.
